PETKİM Petrokimya Holding
A.Ş.
INFORMATION
The
idea of establishing a petrochemical industry in Turkey
was adopted in 1962, which was the beginning of the I.
Five Year Development Plan period. Petkim Petrokimya
Holding A.Ş. was established on April 3, 1965 under the
leadership of TPAO, following the studies and
evaluations performed.
The new
company initially decided to establish Yarımca
Petrochemical Complex and started up the Ethylene,
Chlorine Alkali, VCM, PVC, and LDPE plants in 1970.
The
establishment stage of the Yarımca Petrochemical Complex
was completed after the commissioning of CB, Styrene, PS,
BDX, SBR, CBR, DDB and Caprolactam plants between the
years 1972 and 1976.
Due
to the rapidly growing domestic demand Yarımca Complex
had started to become insufficient to meet the
increasing demand although the production capacities of
the most of the plants that exist in Yarımca Complex
were expanded by 100 %.
The
establishment of second complex of Petkim at Aliağa was
agreed during the III. Five Year Development Plan period.
In Aliağa Complex, the plants which do not exist at
Yarımca such as Aromatics, HDPE, PP, PA, PTA, ACN and EO/EG
and the plants which exist at Yarımca but being
insufficient in capacities such as Ethylene, LDPE,
Chlorine Alkali, VCM and PVC, were established with
highly advanced Technologies and optimum capacities of
those days and start-ups were realized progressively
starting from the year 1985. The capacities of the
plants in Aliağa complex were increased with the first
phase expansion and modernization investments that
realized between 1989 and 1993.
In paralel to
the developments in the world, the petrochemical
industry in Turkey experienced the most prosperous
period between 1987-1990. However, it was dragged into
crisis together with the world petrochemical industry
starting from the year 1991. After the second half of
1994, the positive developments in the world
petrochemical industry influenced the Turkish
petrochemical industry in a posititive way.
Most
of the plants in Yarımca Complex were closed in the
period 1993-1995 because they had completed their
economic lives and had lost their competitiveness.
Petkim transferred Yarımca Complex with its 5 plants (
SBR, CBR, CB, BDX, PS) in operating position to TÜPRAŞ
on November 1, 2001.
Petkim’s
production and sale activities at the high levels
continued also in the year 2003 as in the past years.
However, high feedstok prices and low product prices
resulting from conjuncture, negatively affected also
Petkim’s profitability as seen in all petrochemical
companies.
The
Board of Directors of Petkim decided to close Çanakkale
Plastic Processing Plant as of 01.11.2003 and to
transfer the equipment which could be used in Aliağa
Complex to Aliağa.According to this desicion, the plant
was closed down on 01.11.2003 and transfer of the
equipment to Aliağa Complex was completed.
Domestic supply of petrochemical products in Turkey does
not increase as fast as domestic demand. In order to
meet the rapidly grpwing demand, Petkim realizes
expansion and modernization investments that increase
its capacities significiantly. The second phase
investment period in Aliağa complex that started in
2004. Total investment cost of the second phase is about
400 milllion $, and some of the projects were completed.
With the completion second phase investments saleable
production amount of Petkim will rise to over 1.6
million tons/year.
In
the branch of industry which has intensive technology
and open to any development such as petrochemical
industry, Petkim has one of the more important Research
Centers in Türkiye in order to support technological
developments.
Petkim Total Quality Management implementations was
aimed to generalize. For this purpose Strategic
Management and Performance Management studies was
accelerated.
Petkim that is
consious of importance of sustainable development, not
only carrying out legal requirements, but also aims to
be found in enterprises which will continuously improve
environmental performance. |
